Feeling stuck? 5 ways to move forward in your recovery

Abstinence from any kind of addiction is not an easy task. For drug addicts, just making the decision to quit is an achievement to be proud of. However, no matter how determined you are at the beginning, sometimes this "honeymoon phase" of being highly motivated begins to wear off and you begin to lose focus. Here are five things you can do stay on track:


1. Remind yourself this is normal


Most drug addicts who decided to overcome their habits have to deal with these emotions at some point. Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you’re about to relapse. Many people have gone through the process, triumphed and are now living positive lives. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.


2. Identify your weaknesses


Identify your reasons for feeling incapable of fully recovering and talk to someone about it. Most of the times, these feelings are caused by boredom. The best thing to do is to stay busy. Hang out with friends, attend AA meetings, talk to a therapist, watch movies or read books.


3. Conquer negative thoughts


Conquer your thoughts of relapse by reminding yourself of the negative effects of addiction. Think of all the bad things that drugs brought into your life that made you make the decision to quit. Think of the freedom you’ll get to enjoy after you’re completely free from addiction.


4. Write in a journal


The relapse process starts way before you actually start using again. Keeping a journal will help you be aware of your feelings when you start getting negative thoughts about going back to your addiction. Statistics reveal that even just writing about these negative thoughts can help you overcome them.


5. Commit to something


Think of new things that you would like to start doing and commit to every one of them. Don't get too ambitious, though. Simple things like more exercise, joining a club and reading more books will suffice. Always progress and find new things that will keep you busy and enhance your overall well-being.


If you keep doing the same things over and over again, the results will always be the same. Drug addicts going through the recovery process require constant changes in their lives to successfully move forward.
